sinulog 2011

The Sinulog festival is one of the grandest and most colorful festivals in the Philippines with a very rich history. The main festival is held each year on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City to honor the Santo Niño, or the child Jesus, who used to be the patron saint of the whole province of Cebu (since in the Catholic faith Jesus is not a saint, but God). It is essentially a dance ritual which remembers the Filipino people’s pagan past and their acceptance of Christianity.
The festival features a street parade with participants in bright coloured costumes dancing to the rhythm of drums, trumpets and native gongs. Smaller versions of the festival are held in various parts of the province, also to celebrate and honor the Santo Niño. There is also a "Sinulog sa Kabataan" performed by the youths of Cebu a week before the parade. Recently, the festival has been promoted as a tourist attraction, with a contest featuring contingents from various parts of the country. The Sinulog Contest is usually held in the Cebu City Sports Comple.

  • This 2011 the sinulog festival was rainy but, people were dancing, shaking, walking, praying just for Sr.Sto Nino. many of them were trying to overtime on that event to witness the very special fiesta of all Catholic.
  • CEBU. Rain won’t stop the Sinulog grand parade, as last Sunday’s experience again showed. But how well prepared are local communities for the everyday effects of at least two more months of rainy days? (Amper Campaña)
CEBU CITY — A late start stretched the parade until 9 p.m. and heavy rains soaked dancers and left puddles, but these failed to keep some 3.5 million revelers from joining Sunday’s Sinulog festivities.
Bear in mind, that the Festival Queen is not, by any chance, an advocate of a beauty pageant. This is merely a tribute to the many lead dancers who made 25 years of successful Sinulog Festival. So if you happen to hear a shout of Viva! Pit Senior! in any of the busy streets during such festival, remember, it is led by the queen herself. After all, hers is still the resemblance of a natural queen; the Festival Queen, that is.

Coco Martin and Zanjoe Marudo lead a group of Kapamilya stars who will grace the Sinulog Festival in Cebu.

Finally, the most awaited event of the year is just around the corner. The Sinulog buzz is in the air as bazaars have finally lined up the streets and selling everybody’s favorite goods. We can all see (and feel) it now. The sea of people, the addicting beats, the humid air, the sticky feel of sweat.
